Windsor’s Capitol Theatre will hum with the rhythm of jazz this Saturday as faculty from the School of Creative Arts step out of the classroom and onto the stage for their fourth annual Faculty Jazz Concert.
The concert features a varied program of instrumental and vocal jazz numbers, selected by Mike Karloff, Shahida Nurullah, Bob Fazecas, Steve Wood, Mike Palazzolo, Miles Finlayson and Vanessa Harnish.
“Looking through the program they’ve put together, it’s quite varied and includes some things audiences probably wouldn’t see at any other jazz concert,” said SoCA concert producer and operations manager Trevor Pittman.
He noted Windsor has a dedicated group of jazz enthusiasts who have attended the concert in past years and said students often enjoy seeing their instructors in a new light.
“It’s one thing to sit and listen to your instructor talk about music in class, and another to experience them bringing it to life on stage,” he said, offering audiences a rare glimpse of top local musicians at work.
The evening promises an immersive experience, with musicians from across the region—including Windsor, Detroit and Toronto — blending the jazz scenes of these cities. Several performers have also played with symphonies and at the Detroit Jazz Festival.
“These people are at the top of their field in our area,” Pittman said. “They teach for us and do wonderful things within the school, but we also want to promote the level of musicianship we have here.”
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Capitol Theatre. Tickets are available online at www.capitoltheatrewindsor.ca/events/: $25 for adults, $10 for students, and free for SoCA students and faculty.
