WINDSOR, Ont. — The University of Windsor has reached its highest-ever position in the QS World University Rankings, ranking third in Ontario among non-medical universities and placing among the world’s top 20 per cent for research impact.

This year, more than 8,800 institutions were evaluated and 1,504 were ranked. UWindsor placed 537th overall — up nine positions from last year — marking its third consecutive year among the top 550 universities in the world and making it one of only eight Canadian universities to improve its position this year.

Now in its 23rd edition, the QS rankings is one of the most widely referenced assessments of university performance globally.

Behind the result is research influence — a measure of how often scholars around the world read, use and cite research produced at UWindsor.

"These rankings reflect years of deliberate investment in our researchers and our academic mission,” said Dr. J.J. McMurtry, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Windsor. “Reaching our highest-ever global ranking, and doing it in the company of institutions many times our size, speaks to the strength of this university and the impact of the research being done here.”

When scholars publish their own work, they cite the sources that shape their thinking. UWindsor researchers averaged 161 citations per faculty member, nearly triple the global average of 59.9.

That measure, known as Citations per Faculty, accounts for university size, allowing institutions of different sizes to be compared more fairly. On that indicator, UWindsor ranked 265th globally, an improvement of 34 positions over the previous year.

That research is also producing real-world benefits for people and communities.

Dr. Aaron Fisk leads the Real-Time Aquatic Ecosystem Observation Network, giving Canadian researchers tools to monitor Great Lakes health in real time. Dr. Trevor Pitcher’s Freshwater Restoration Ecology Centre — the only facility of its kind in the Great Lakes Basin — is developing best practices for restoring degraded aquatic ecosystems. Researchers affiliated with the WE-SPARK Health Institute are advancing cancer research through the Windsor Cancer Research Group. The Windsor Law Centre for Cities is working directly with municipalities on housing policy through the Horizons initiative.

The ranking also carries good news for students and graduates.

UWindsor’s Employment Outcomes indicator — which measures how well graduates fare in the labour market and the broader impact of alumni careers — ranked 497th globally, placing the University in the top 35 per cent worldwide.

The ranking points to strong graduate outcomes and the broader impact of UWindsor alumni.

“These results reflect the quality of scholarship happening in every corner of this university,” said Dr. Shanthi Johnson, vice-president, research and innovation at the University of Windsor. “From engineering and the sciences to the arts, humanities and social sciences — our researchers are producing work that is being read, built upon and cited by scholars around the world. That global reach is what moves a ranking like this.”
