What is OPUS?
The story of OPUS: Empowering part-time and mature students since 1969
For over five decades, the Organization of Part-time University Students (OPUS) has been a vital force in supporting and uplifting non-traditional students at the University of Windsor. Founded in 1969, OPUS was born from a simple yet powerful vision: to ensure that part-time and mature learners receive the recognition, advocacy, and resources they deserve to thrive in their academic journey.
At a time when higher education was largely structured around full-time traditional students, OPUS emerged as a voice for those who took a different path. Whether balancing work and family, returning to school later in life, or pursuing education one course at a time, part-time and mature students found in OPUS a community that understood their unique needs.
Over the years, OPUS has expanded its services and evolved into a multifaceted organization dedicated to student success. From personalized advising and bursaries to representation at university governance and access to essential services, OPUS ensures its members never feel alone. Its commitment is clear: to create an inclusive, empowering environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their academic path.
Beyond services, OPUS is a community. Through mentorship, peer support, and advocacy, the organization fosters a deep sense of belonging. It recognizes that academic success is not only about grades but about wellbeing, connection, and feeling seen.
In recent years, OPUS has strengthened its presence on campus and online, developing engaging campaigns, orientation events, and partnerships that celebrate and support its members. Its leadership team, staff, and volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that every student who walks through their door feels welcomed, valued, and supported.
OPUS is an organization, and it is a movement. A movement that believes in second chances, in lifelong learning, and in the power of community. It is a testament to what can be achieved when we choose to uplift one another.
As we look ahead, OPUS remains steadfast in its mission to empower and advocate for part-time and mature students. It continues to be a beacon of support, resilience, and inspiration on campus. Because every student matters, and at OPUS, every student belongs as a part of the whole campus community.
