Skills to Enhance Personal Success (STEPS)

The Skills to Enhance Personal Success (STEPS) program offers a wide variety of free workshops aimed at providing students with practical methods for improving their learning and study skills.

As a faculty member, you can book STEPS sessions for your students. STEPS offers a number of in-person programming options ranging from five-minute talks to full-hour workshops. From classroom visits to “boot camp” workshops, sessions can be catered to your students’ unique needs.

STEPS also offers the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) and VARK (Visual, Auditory, Read/write, and Kinesthetic learning) Questionnaire to students. Following an assessment, the STEPS coordinator will discuss the student’s results and help them develop ways to enhance their study habits. To book an appointment, direct your students to email steps@uwindsor.ca.

Who can use STEPS?

While a few STEPS workshops are customized for students from specific faculties, STEPS is open to all students at the University – in every program at every level.

Which workshop topics are available?

Current STEPS workshop topics include:

  • Effective Reading Strategies
  • Strategic Note Taking
  • Multiple Choice Tests and Exams
  • Effective Memory Strategies
  • Study Smarter, Not Harder
  • Taming the Chaos (Time Management)
  • Exam Preparation
  • Exam Strategies
  • Test Anxiety

Where do I find the workshop schedule?

Consult the online STEPS Workshop Schedule.

How can my students stay up-to-date with STEPS programming?

STEPS is on social media. Its Facebook page, in particular, offers study tips and daily workshop reminders. Students can find all social media links on the STEPS website.

STEPS recently launched a new monthly email newsletter, which contains programming information and study tips. Again, students can subscribe via the STEPS website.

How do I arrange to use STEPS?

No pre-registration is required to attend group workshops. To book one-on-one sessions, students can email steps@uwindsor.ca.

STEPS is located in the Student Success Centre, Dillon Hall Room 111.
