Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance
Canadian documentary directed by Alanis Obomsawin. The film chronicles the 1990 Oka Crisis from the perspective of the Mohawk community, drawing on footage recorded during the 78-day standoff between Indigenous land defenders, Quebec police, and the Canadian Army. The National Film Board Indigenous Cinema Collection offers hundreds of free Indigenousmade films and documentaries. The NFB's Indigenous Cinema collection includes more than 400 titles by Indigenous creators. Access the collection here.
The Road Forward
The Road Forward is a 2017 Canadian musical documentary written and directed by Marie Clements. The film combines documentary storytelling with original musical performances to trace the history of Indigenous rights activism in Canada from the 1930s to the present, linking past struggles with contemporary movements. The Secret Path
An animated film adaptation of Gord Downie's album and Jeff Lemire's graphic novel is a retelling of Chanie Wenjack’s heartbreaking story about his residential school escape. Watch online and learn about how his death set forth the first inquest into the treatment of Indigenous children in Canadian residential schools. (129 mins)
This River
When the body of a 14-year-old girl was pulled from Winnipeg’s Red River in 2014, it started a public outcry and renewed calls for a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women. View this film as it follows volunteers searching trying to find answers surrounding the disappearances and murder of their loved ones. (20 min)
We Were Children
In this feature film, the profound impact of the Canadian government’s residential school system is conveyed through the eyes of two children, Lyna and Glen, who were forced to face hardships beyond their years. View their emotional story online. (84 mins)
