The Indigenous Allyship Guide was developed for the University of Windsor (UWindsor) community to support meaningful learning, relationship-building, and action toward reconciliation. The guide recognizes that allyship is an ongoing journey rooted in respect, humility, accountability, and a commitment to learning.
The guide was created to:
- Support Indigenous students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members in learning about and reconnecting with the local history, cultures, experiences, and contemporary realities of Indigenous Peoples, with a focus on the unique context of the lands and communities where UWindsor is located.
- Provide guidance for non-Indigenous students, faculty, staff, and community members who are seeking to become stronger allies by developing a deeper understanding of Indigenous histories, the impacts of colonization, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, and their role in supporting respectful relationships.
- Help reduce the burden placed on Indigenous students, faculty, staff, and community members who are often asked to educate others, answer questions, or navigate difficult conversations about Indigenous Peoples, cultures, and experiences. By providing accessible resources and learning opportunities, the guide encourages individuals to take responsibility for their own learning and growth.
The Allyship Guide provides opportunities for education, reflection, and meaningful action. It encourages participants to move beyond awareness by engaging in continuous learning, building authentic relationships, challenging assumptions, advocating for change, and practicing accountability in their personal and professional spaces.
True allyship is not a destination—it is an ongoing commitment to listening, learning, and taking action in support of Indigenous self-determination, belonging, and reconciliation. Through this guide, the University of Windsor community is invited to reflect on their role in creating a more inclusive, respectful, and equitable environment for all.
