Self-Insurance Program

Thefts

Due to the fact that the deductible on the property policy is $50,000, the University has a self-insurance program which can respond to cover theft of University-owned property that is under this amount.

One of the main criteria of this policy is that there must be clear evidence of break and enter and that good key control procedures were in place.

It is difficult to make a claim for property that has mysteriously disappeared with no evidence of forced entry. Such mysterious disappearances and/or unexplained loss are specifically excluded from perils covered by the property insurance policy and will not be covered by the University's self-insurance program.

Consequently, access to facilities should be controlled by the departments and University property appropriately supervised.

Faculty and staff are advised to:

  • Monitor and keep an inventory of the equipment for which they are responsible
  • Supervise their own classrooms and labs
  • Always lock the doors of unoccupied offices (even if unoccupied for a brief period)
  • Follow University of Windsor lock and key procedures (call Physical Plant)

Report all incidents immediately upon discovery to Campus Police
