A new partnership with ACSOM non-profit medical school in Dominica has created a new pathway for UWindsor students pursuing careers in medicine (PROVIDED BY ACSOM/University of Windsor)
University of Windsor students across undergraduate programs will have a new accelerated route to medical school beginning in fall 2026 through a partnership with the American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM).
The pathway will allow qualified students to move into medical education after as little as two years at UWindsor and ultimately earn both a UWindsor undergraduate degree and an ACSOM medical degree in as little as six years.
“This pathway significantly expands what is possible for University of Windsor students who aspire to careers in medicine,” says Dr. J.J. McMurtry, president and vice-chancellor. “Students can pursue the undergraduate field that interests them while gaining access to a clear, accelerated route that can lead to both a UWindsor degree and an MD.”
The pathway is designed to give students greater flexibility in how they prepare for medical school. Rather than being tied to a single undergraduate program, qualified students from across UWindsor can pursue the opportunity while completing the academic requirements needed for admission.
That flexibility gives students the opportunity to build their undergraduate education around their interests while preparing for medical studies.
“The American Canadian Medical School in Dominica, (ACSOM), is the only not-for-profit medical school in the Caribbean and is determined to address the alarming shortage of physicians in Canada by creating pathways to medical school for highly-qualified Canadian students,” said Dr. Andrew Padmos, ACSOM’s Executive Vice President for Canada.
“Our partnership with the University of Windsor will be good for the Windsor region and good for Ontario.”
Students accepted into the pathway will complete their initial undergraduate studies at UWindsor before transitioning to ACSOM’s medical program. Those who successfully complete the pathway and MD program will be eligible to receive both a University of Windsor undergraduate degree and an ACSOM MD.
Under the agreement, at least 50 conditional-admission positions will be available each year to qualified UWindsor students, providing a significant new opportunity for students seeking a pathway to medical education.
ACSOM is a non-profit medical school based in Dominica. The partnership adds a new option for UWindsor students pursuing careers in medicine and reflects the University’s focus on creating pathways that connect undergraduate education with professional opportunities.
The new pathway will begin in fall 2026.
