Tax Clinic

In Canada, the taxation system is administered through Canada Revenue Agency. The tax year is January 1 to December 31. 

International Students living in Canada should file a tax return, even if you have no income to report. You may be eligible for tax credits from the government. 

The International Student Centre offers free tax clinics to all international students on campus. Check your blackboard ISC announcements for dates for the next Tax Clinic.

SIN Clinic

In order to work in Canada you must have a SIN (Social Insurance Number) For your convenience the International Student Centre invites Service Canada staff to come to the ISC and issue SINs to eligible students. Check your blackboard ISC announcements for dates for the next SIN Clinic.

Please Note:

You must have one of the following conditions or remarks printed on your study permit in order to apply for a SIN for off-campus work: 

  • May work 20 hrs per week off-campus or full time during regular breaks if meeting criteria outlined in section 186 (v) of IRPR.
  • May accept employment on or off-campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (f), (v) or (w). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.

Working

Ignite is the University of Windsor’s Work Study program and funds approximately 400 part-time jobs on campus for students demonstrating financial need related to basic living expenses and direct educational costs. Positions offer an opportunity for both financial benefits and skills development. The program is a partnership between Student Awards & Financial Aid and Career Development & Experiential Learning.

It’s important to protect yourself from scams. Be alerted when you receive phone calls from people claiming to be immigration officers from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) officers.  The callers will try to obtain personal information from you and ask for payment through gift cards, money wires or e-transfers. Do not give any personal information.

Please note that CRA and IRCC employees will not call you over the phone. 

If you receive a suspicious call, you can contact the IRCC and CRA to confirm whether the call is genuine. You can also report the fraud to local police or Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501).

Job Scams

When you are looking for jobs, be very careful with various job scams. If the job involves you depositing money and then transferring or withdrawing the money, it is a SCAM! Please read the Job Scams guideline and learn how to protect yourself during the job seeking process.
