Windsor Law Announces Social Justice Fellows for Summer 2015.

Windsor Law has awarded six Social Justice Fellowships for the Summer of 2015. These Fellowships provide financial, career development and networking support to students interested in social justice advocacy. Since the inception of this program in 2005, more than $270,000 in financial support has been provided to students to support their social justice pursuits internationally and domestically.

The 2015 Windsor Law Alumni Social Justice Fellows are:

Amneet Singh Bali is currently in his first year at Windsor Law. He is a community activist and organizer who has inspired a generation of youth activism in the Sikh Diaspora. As a distinguished activist profiled in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and a former Press Secretary with the Leader of the Official Opposition and Canada's NDP, Amneet has taken his fight from academia and grassroots organizing to Canada's Parliament. Amneet has earned his reputation challenging impunity for Indian state actors involved in the 1984 Sikh Genocide. He holds a BA Honours Specialization in Social Justice and Peace Studies from the Western University, along with an MA in Conflict Studies from the University of Ottawa. As a social justice fellow, Amneet will be interning with human rights Ensaaf in Pleasonton, California and Brampton, Ontario. 

Lindsay Carbonero, is in her second year at Windsor Law, and holds an Honours B.A. in Political Science from York University. Prior to attending Windsor Law, Lindsay spent a year working with a national non-profit organization. In 2014, Lindsay was awarded the Transnational Law and Justice Network Fellowship. As part of this Fellowship, Lindsay is conducting supervised research with Professor Waters and Professor Xavier in conjunction with Amnesty International on International Criminal Law issues. She is currently a Project Assistant to Professor Adam Vasey, assisting with research related to the development, design and implementation of a social justice externship program in law. She hopes to utilize her legal education and the opportunity offered by the Social Justice Fellowship to become an advocate for social justice and human rights. An active member of the Windsor Law community, Lindsay is involved in Pro Bono Students Canada, AskLaw, Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund. She will spend her fellowship at the Hague with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

Supriya Joshi is currently in her second year at Windsor Law. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in International Relations with a minor in History and Political Science. Presently, Supriya is a Second Year Law Representative for Law Students for Reproductive Justice. Previously, she was President of the South Asian Development Council at the University of Toronto. Supriya’s fellowship is with the Human Rights Law Network, a network at the forefront of litigation of women’s issues across India.

Yasmeen Peer is currently in her first year at Windsor Law. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts specializing in Peace and Conflict Studies with a focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the University of Toronto. Additionally, Yasmeen holds a Masters of Arts in International Peace and Conflict Resolution. In the past, she worked and volunteered with the National Lawyers Guild, Abraham’s Vision, UNRWA Gaza Palestinian Refugee Camp, and Ingen Magazine. Yasmeen is an active volunteer with Pro Bono Students Canada and she enjoyed performing in the Vagina Monologues. Her fellowship will be completed at the Hague with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. 

Farah Saleem is currently in her first year at Windsor Law. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts double majoring in Political Science and Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour from McMaster University. Previously, she was a Youth Coordinator for the Youth Troopers for Global Awareness and Co-Chair of the Organizing Committee for the IGNITE Youth Conference. Farrah will spend the summer with the Centre for Policy Alternatives in Sri Lanka.     .

Laura Stairs is currently in her second year at Windsor Law. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Global Development Studies with a focus in Politics and Gender Studies from Queen’s University. In the past, Laura worked with Legal Assistance Windsor, sat as a Board Member for the Association of Canadian Clinical Legal Education, and volunteered with Pro Bono Students Canada. Laura hopes to further her work in social justice by interning at Kituo Cha Sheria in Nairobi, Kenya.
