Windsor-Essex County to gain Gladue writer.

The Steering Committee on Aboriginal Support worked with Legal Aid Ontario to secure funding for a full-time Gladue writer — an officer of the court who makes sentencing recommendations for aboriginal offenders — in Windsor-Essex County.

“We’re trying to break down some of the barriers between the aboriginal community and the criminal justice system,” said Marion Overholt, the executive director of Legal Assistance of Windsor and Community Legal Aid.

Russel Nahdee, a member of the steering committee who works with the Aboriginal Education Centre at the University of Windsor said, "a Gladue report basically corrects a failure in the system”. Nahdee is also a member of the Anishinabe First Nation.
