Important Dates for Graduate Students

Please note effective March 18, 2020 the Faculty of Graduate Studies staff are working remotely and are not available for in-person visits and phone calls. For any inquiries please direct your questions to the appropriate staff member via email.

August 21

Last day to submit for format checking dissertations, theses and major papers to the Graduate Studies office, for students who are planning to deposit by August 31st within Summer term 2020. 

August 31

Last day to complete all degree requirements, including the final submission (deposit) of major papers, theses and dissertations within Summer term 2020. Refer to Summer term dates for details. 

(REVISED) September 1, 2020 (extended from August 1st) -  Deadline to Apply to Graduate at Fall convocation 2020.

STUDENTS WHO APPLIED FOR SPRING 2020 CONVOCATION BUT DID NOT GRADUATE MUST REAPPLY FOR FALL 2020 CONVOCATION

September 7 - Labour Day (statutory holiday)

September 8 - Faculty of Law: First day of classes

September 10 - First day of Fall term classes (excluding Law)

September 10 - Final oral defense and format checking deadline for Fall graduation and Phase I:

  • last day for the final oral defense of dissertations, theses and major papers for Fall graduation, and
  • last day to submit for format checking dissertations, theses and major papers to Graduate Studies, for students who are planning to meet the Fall graduation and Phase I (100% tuition refund) deadline for Fall term 2020.  Students should allow at least 3 business days to receive formatting feedback.

Students who are defending or depositing must be registered for Fall 2020 - review the registration requirements for students in research programs who are defending and/or depositing.

September 21- Fall graduation and Phase I deposit deadline:

  • Last day to complete all requirements for graduate degrees, including the deposit of dissertations, theses and major papers to Graduate Studies, for Fall graduation; and
  • Last day for completion of all requirements for graduate degrees, including the deposit of dissertations, theses and major papers to Graduate Studies, under Phase I (100% tuition refund) of the tuition fee refund policy for the Fall term 2020.

Note: All students who are planning to gradate in the Fall convocation must have applied to graduate. Students who applied for Spring 2020 graduation but did not graduate must re-apply for Fall - review details from Registrar's office graduation webpage.

Students completing the deposit must be registered for Fall 2020 - review the registration requirements for students in research programs who are defending and/or depositing.

September 21 -  Law: Last day to Drop Fall Classes in Law

September 23 -  Academic Add/Drop: Last day for late registration & changes for Fall 2020 courses

October 5 format checking deadline for Phase II:

Last day to submit for format checking dissertations, theses and major papers to Graduate Studies, for students who are planning to meet the Phase II (50% tuition refund) deadline for Fall term 2020.

(REVISED) October 7 - Financial Drop Date for Fall semester

October 12 - Thanksgiving Day (University closed)

October 10-18 - Reading Week (except Education and JD Law)

October 13 - Phase II deposit deadline:

Last day for completion of all requirements for graduate degrees, including the deposit of dissertations, theses and major papers to Graduate Studies, under Phase II (50% tuition refund) of the tuition fee refund policy for the Fall term 2020.

(REVISED) October 14-17 - Fall Convocation

Note: All students who are planning to gradate in the Fall convocation must have applied to graduate. Students who applied for Spring 2020 graduation but did not graduate must re-apply for Fall - review details from Registrar's office graduation webpage.

November 18 - Last day to voluntarily withdraw from Fall term courses

November 27 - Last day to send a doctoral dissertation to the External Examiner for a January 2021 defense.

December 15 - Winter term fees are due and payable.

Dec. 23rd, 2020 to Jan. 1st, 2021 - University Offices closed for December Holiday recess.

April 28 - Deadline to Apply to Graduate for Spring 2020 Graduation

May 1, 2020 - Format checking deadline for Spring 2020 graduation:

Last day to submit for format checking dissertations, theses and major papers to the Graduate Studies office for students who are planning to meet the Spring 2020 graduation deposit deadline (May 8th) in order to graduate in Spring 2020. Students should allow at least 2 business days to receive formatting feedback.

May 4, 2020  - Summer term classes begin for Education graduate programs

May 4, 2020 - Final oral defense deadline for Spring Graduation 2020:  

Last day for the final oral defense of dissertations, theses and major papers for Spring Graduation 2020. 

May 8, 2020 - Spring Graduation 2020 deposit deadline:

Last day for the final submission (deposit) for Spring Graduation 2020.

  • Student who complete the deposit by the May 8th convocation deadline will both graduate in Spring 2020 and receive the Phase I tuition refund for the Summer term 2020 (provided they have applied to graduate and that they meet the convocation and tuition refund eligibility criteria).
  • Students who miss the May 8th graduation deadline will not graduate in Spring 2020 but will receive the Phase I tuition refund for the Summer term 2020, provided their deposit is completed by the Phase I deadline of May 22 and they meet the tuition refund eligibility criteria. 

May 14, 2020 - Format checking deadline for Phase I:

Last day to submit for format checking dissertations, theses and major papers to the Graduate Studies office, for students who are planning to meet Phase I. Students should allow at least 2 business days to receive formatting feedback.

May 15, 2020 - Summer term fees are due and payable.

May 17, 2020 - Financial Drop Date - Faculty of Education Graduate Programs Inter-session (6 week)

May 18,2020 -Victoria Day (Statutory holiday) - University closed.

May 19, 2020 REVISED: Summer term classes begin (all programs except Education)

May 22, 2020 - Phase I deposit deadline:

Last day to deposit dissertations, theses and major papers under Phase I (100% tuition refund) of the tuition fee refund policy for the Summer term 2020.

POSTPONED: May 26-29, 2020 - Spring 2020 Convocation ceremony.

May 31st - Financial Drop Date - Faculty of Education Graduate Programs (12 week).

June 1, 2020 REVISED: - Academic Add/Drop Date for Summer term: Last day for late registration and change of courses. 

June 8, 2020

Format checking deadline for Phase II: last day to submit for format checking dissertations, theses and major papers to the Graduate Studies office, for students who are planning to meet the Phase II (50% tuition refund) of the tuition fee refund policy for Summer term 2020.

June 11, 2020: Last day to file an appeal of grades for Winter 2020 (undergraduate and graduate courses).

June 15, 2020:

Phase II deadline: last day for completion of all requirements for graduate degrees under Phase II (50% tuition refund) of the tuition fee refund policy for Summer term 2020.

June 15, 2020 REVISED: Financial Drop Date - Summer term 2020 (12-week) (except Faculty of Education).

July 1, 2020

Canada Day, University closed.

July 10, 2020: Financial Drop Date - Faculty of Education Graduate Programs Summer (3 week)

July 17 REVISED: Last Day to Voluntarily Withdraw from Full Summer (12 week) 2020 courses

July 28, 2020

Deadline for recommending a PhD external examiner for students who plan to graduate at the Fall Convocation

August 3, 2020

Civic Holiday (statutory holiday). University Closed

August 15, 2020

Fall term fees are due and payable.

August 21, 2020

Last day to submit for format checking dissertations, theses and major papers to the Graduate Studies office, for students who are planning to deposit by August 31st within Summer term 2020. 

August 31, 2020

Last day to complete all degree requirements within Summer term 2020, including the final submission (deposit) of major papers, theses and dissertations. Students who have not completed all deposit requirements by August 31st must register for Fall term 2020. Tuition refunds (Phase I and Phase II) are available to eligible students in research programs who complete the final oral defense and/or deposit at the beginning of Fall term 2020, provided all coursework and other program requirements were completed in previous terms - for details review the registration requirements and Phase I/II deadlines for students in research programs who are defending and/or depositing.
