Windsor Law students competed in the 44th Annual Zuber Moot this week.

The Zuber Moot provides Windsor Law students with an opportunity to moot competitively and to practice their oral advocacy skills.

The 2017 Zuber moot case, R v Alex, involved complex statutory provisions of the Criminal Code with a constitutional element. The case concerned the admission of breathalyzer evidence that may have been obtained unlawfully.

A total of 22 teams competed in the preliminary rounds.

The finalists, Paris Wildman-Sisk and Ivan Lazarov who represented the appellants and Alona Semichenko and Brittany Rizzo who represented the respondents, presented their arguments before Madame Justice Lois Roberts of the Ontario Court of Appeal, Madame Justice Renee Pomerance of the Superior Court of Justice, and Justice Lloyd Dean of the Ontario Court of Justice.

The bench ruled in favour of the respondents and Wildman-Sisk and Semichenko were selected as the top oralists.

Special thanks to the 2017 Zuber Moot Committee Michael Hodgins, Paola Ramirez, Akiva Stern, and Jonathan Virtue and the Honourable Justices.
