TRC Panel Discussion (CAW)

Hear the Truth on the impact of the residential school system on First Peoples of Canada, and how we can be a part of the Reconciliation process, “so that we can work towards a stronger and healthier future”.

Panelists:

  • Myrna Kicknosway - Anishinaabe from Bkejwanong; Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother; Windsor Law Elder in Residence; Offers guidance in a number of areas including education, counselling, economic/employment planning, federal corrections, environmental activism, and community development.
  • Dr. Valarie Waboose - Anishinaabe from Bkejwanong, Windsor Law Alumni and Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Law; sits on Chief & Council for Walpole Island; Director of the Indigenous Legal Institute; and is a life skills coach. Her doctoral dissertation is entitled, "Reliving the Residential School Experience: Anishinaabe, Kwe's examination of the compensation processes for residential school survivors."
  • Dr. Cynthia Stirbys - Cynthia "Niioo-bineh-seh-kwe" Stirbys is Saulteaux-Cree from Treaty 4 Saskatchewan but was raised in northern Ontario. In her PhD research about residential schools, Dr. Stirbys gathered storiesfrom Indigenous women to learn how they cope with the legacy of residential schools and maintain wellness. Dr. Stirbys is a fourth-generation descendent of three generations of survivors and is also a new Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Windsor.
