Discussion with former Attorney General Yasir Naqvi

Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - 19:00

Windsor Law students, faculty and staff are invited to attend this online discussion with Yasir Naqvi, former Attorney General of Ontario and CEO of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.

Pro-democracy advocates, Yasir’s family emigrated from Pakistan to Canada in 1988. After being called to the bar in 2001, Yasir practised international trade and administrative law with major law firms. Inspired by his parents, Yasir served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, representing a diverse community in Ottawa between 2007 and 2018. In 2016, he was sworn in as the Attorney General of Ontario. In 2019 he became CEO of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.

Yasir has marked our idea of citizenship in multiple ways. While Attorney General of Ontario, he implemented the All Families Are Equal Act to ensure that all children are treated equally, regardless of how they are conceived and recognize the legal status of all parents. He also championed new laws to prevent sexual violence and help survivors, increase respect for the rights and cultures of Indigenous peoples, expand access to restorative justice, and promote multiculturalism.

On Wednesday evening, in discussion with Prof. Noel Semple, Yasir will talk about diversity and inclusion in the COVID era, the work of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, and the relationship between political involvement and citizenship.
