What does it mean to make “good trouble” in education?

Challenging government interference in classrooms? Defending access to books in school libraries? Questioning policies that shape what students learn?

Educational Leaders Without Borders (ELWB) is inviting scholars, educators and educational leaders to explore these questions as part of its 2027 conference, taking place April 18 to 20 at the University of Windsor.

Under the theme “Good Trouble Leadership: Educating for Democracy Under Pressure,” the conference will examine how educators can challenge established practices, confront inequities and turn disruption into meaningful change.

"The Faculty of Education is proud to be hosting this conference in collaboration with Assumption University," says Dr. Michael MacDonald, associate dean, graduate studies and research at UWindsor's Faculty of Education explaining that the conference will feature presentations from a forthcoming edited book on the conference theme.

"Indigenous and Black Canadian history and perspectives will be integrated into the conference," he adds, "and the impact will focus on promoting educational leadership and collaboration across borders."

Potential topics range from protecting students and educators amid the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools to addressing the displacement of children and families caused by climate change, war and migration.

Rather than simply identifying challenges, the conference encourages participants to propose practical approaches that strengthen educational access, equity and democratic values.

The submission deadline is Saturday, Oct. 31, with proposals reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis.

Email submissions to Rosemary Papa, founder and executive director of ELWB, at rpapa@fselwb.com.
