Annual Welcome BBQ

2024

The Benefits Plan/Student Centre Facilities Administrator of the Organization of Part-time University Students (OPUS) Steve Jancev, OPUS Executive Director Maryan Amalow, President Chris Baillargeon along with the OPUS Board of Directors and volunteers welcomed members and guests to campus with a free barbecue and provided several great door prizes for all students at the Assumption grounds on Thursday, Sept. 19th, 2024. This barbecue was the 22nd Annual Welcome BBQ for OPUS. 

Special thanks to the University of Windsor's President Dr. Robert Gordon and AVP Student Experience Dr. Shetina Jones who welcomed students to the event. The announcement of the $1,850 Free Tuition Bursary winner sponsored by the Alumni Association was Ali Harb. We also selected the winner, Jessica Westfall, by random draw for the OPUS new student bursary valued at $800. There was a tremendous turnout that included part-time undergraduate, full-time undergraduate, and graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the University. Over 600 students, staff and faculty members were fed during the two hours. Students that attended had an opportunity to visit the vendor booths from the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), Campus Dental Centre, Green Shield Canada (GSC), Women’s Enterprise Skills Training (WEST), TD Canada Trust and Lancer Recreation. These organizations provided information, materials, and other giveaways.

The free meal included a beef burger, chicken souvlaki or a vegetarian option falafel wrap along with quinoa salad and gelato. The barbeque was served by UWindsor Food & Catering Services Sodexo. Special thanks to the OPUS Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers for their tremendous support. The barbeque was accompanied by lively music courtesy of CJAM 99.1 FM, Campus Community Radio. Thank you to the many university administrators who attended including Dr. John Cappucci, Principal of Assumption University, who helped us announce the grand prize winner.

This barbecue was the 20th Annual Welcome BBQ for OPUS. 

UWindsor's AVP student experience Dr. Phebe Lam welcomed students to the event and announced the winner of the $1,850 Free Tuition Bursary sponsored by the Alumni Association. The lucky winner was Elijah Sevilla-Garcia, a part-time undergraduate student. There was a tremendous turnout that included part-time undergraduate, full-time undergraduate, graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the University. Over 500 students, staff and faculty members were fed during the two hours. Students that attended had an opportunity to visit the vendor booths from the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), Campus Dental Centre, Lancer Recreation, Green Shield Canada (GSC)/National Student Health Network (NSHN), Office of Human Rights, Equity and Accessibility(OHREA), Office of Open Learning, TD Canada Trust, and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). These organizations provided information, materials, and other giveaways.

The free meal included chicken souvlaki, beef burger as well as a vegetarian option falafel. Also included were chips & water. The barbeque was served by UWindsor Food & Catering Services along with OPUS volunteers. The Benefits Administrator & Student Centre Facilities Administrator of the Organization of Part-time University Students (OPUS) Steve Jancev, OPUS Executive Director Maryan Amalow & the OPUS Board of Directors welcomed members and guests to campus with a free barbecue and provided several great door prices for all students at the Assumption grounds on Thursday Sept. 20; this barbecue was the 16th annual for OPUS. The UWINDSOR Interim President Dr. Douglas Kneale welcomed students to the event and announced the winner of the $1,850 Free Tuition Bursary sponsored by the Alumni Association. The lucky winner was Paul Wright, a part-time undergraduate distance education student. There was a tremendous turnout that included part-time undergraduate, full-time undergraduate, graduate students, faculty, staff and alumni of the University. Over 400 students, staff and faculty members were fed during the two hours while supplies last. Interested students received free student discount cards from the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), information materials and other giveaways from Campus Dental Centre, Lancer Recreation, Green Shield, WEST, Custom Essentials & OPIRG.

The free meal included chicken souvlaki, beef burger as well as a vegetarian option falafel. Also included were chips, fruit & drinks. The barbeque was served by UWindsor Food & Catering Services along with OPUS volunteers. Special thanks to the OPUS Board of Directors, Staff, Volunteers & the event photographer SS Media Productions for their tremendous support. The barbeque was accompanied by lively music courtesy of CJAM, Campus Community Radio. This event promises free food and beverages prepared and served by Catering Services, on the lawn outside the northwest corner of the CAW Student Centre.

Eat, drink and enjoy a quick meal on your way to class OR If you don’t have a class, drop by the campus where the OPUS Directors and Staff will be there to welcome you, answer questions or help meet fellow Part-Time Students.

2010 

The Organization of Part-time University Students (OPUS) along with the Alumni Association hosted the 2010 Annual BBQ to welcome new and returning part-time students to the University.

There was a tremendous turnout that included part-time students, faculty and friends of the University.

The meal included free hamburgers, hot dogs as well as vegetarian options. Also included were chips, pops and bottles of water. The barbeque was served by members of the OPUS Board of Directors, staff and OPUS volunteers. The barbeque was accompanied by lively music courtesy Steve Jancev, Health Plan Administrator for OPUS.

Over six hundred students, staff and faculty members were fed during the two hours. Interested students received important information about the organization and its activities around University.

Many campus celebrities attended the 2010 BBQ including: Mr. Tom Porter (Alumni President), Dr. Clayton Smith (Vice Provost Students and International, Mr. Gregory Marcotte (Director, Registrars), Susan Page (Advisor for Part-Time Students) and many more. Special Thanks to our guests from the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) and International Service Learning.
