Introduction to Federated Learning – Part 1

Presenter: Safiia Mohammed – PhD Candidate

Date: Tuesday, October 18th, 2022

Location: 4th Floor (Workshop space) at 300 Ouellette Avenue (School of Computer Science Advanced Computing Hub)

Abstract:

This workshop will cover the main concepts of Federated Learning, when different agents/ workers can join a federated environment to train their models without sharing their datasets. The workshops will give examples of working on open-source frameworks.

At the end of this workshop, the audience should be able to:

- Identify the concepts of federated learning, its characteristics and its advantages.

- Recognize how does FL work?

Prerequisites:

Python preferred to know PyTorch/tensor flow frameworks.

Workshop Outline:

What is federated learning (5 minutes)

Federated learning architecture / how does it work? (15)

FL vs centralized learning (10)

FL applications (10)

Privacy issues in FL (10)

Q&A and discussions (10 mins)
