Bigdata Engineering with Apache Kafka (Hands-on Workshop; Series 2 - Introduction)
Presenter: Abdulrauf Aremu Gidado – PhD Candidate
Date: Monday, October 31st, 2022
Time: 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Location: 4th Floor (Workshop space) at 300 Ouellette Avenue (School of Computer Science Advanced Computing Hub)
Space is limited to 80 attendees
Abstract:
The skyrocketing increase in process digitization/automation has led to an almost uncontrollable production of data in various forms (e.g., textual, images, videos etc.), huge sizes (e.g., in yottabytes i.e., septillions of bytes) and high-speed from disparate sources. The existing state of the art Bigdata pipelining, streaming, analysis, and integration tools such as Apache RabbitMQ and ActiveMQ could barely handle these features of data emerging from and used by trending critical applications used in the governance, telecommunication, transportation, energy, entertainment, and e-commerce industries, such as YouTube, Uber, Netflix, Spotify, Amazon, Walmart etc., leading to the creation of Apache Kafka by LinkedIn and later open sourced under the Apache License. Apache Kafka is an open-source distributed events streaming platform used by thousands of companies for high-performance data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications. According to the official Apache Kafka website, currently, 10/10 largest insurance companies, 10/10 largest manufacturing companies, 10/10 largest information technology and services companies, 8/10 largest telecommunications companies, 8/10 of the largest transportation companies, 7/10 largest retail companies, 7/10 of the largest banks and finance companies, 6/10 largest energy and utilities organizations in the world use Apache Kafka due to its efficiency. This workshop would provide hands-on training on Apache Kafka, its theory and technical usage. This is the second of the Kafka workshop series, which covers Kafka Installations, Configuration/Customization, Administering Kafka with CLI, Java as intertwined with Kafka etc.
At the end of this workshop, participants should:
1. Understand and be able to implement Kafka's Theory in Bigdata.
2. Understand various components of the Apache Kafka engine and their respective functions.
3. Install and set up Apache Kafka on Unix and Windows Based Servers.
4. Understands various Apache Kafka configuration files and usage on test and production servers.
Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of Java programming/other languages (s) is also welcome, and Unix commands or nothing, as the workshop, encompasses an introduction for Unix novices as well.
