Maintenance Services oversees the servicing and repair of all elevators on campus. Elevator maintenance is performed under contract by a licensed elevator service provider; only qualified elevator mechanics are permitted to work on the equipment.
If you are trapped in an elevator
1. Remain calm and stay in the car. The elevator is designed to hold in place. It will not fall.
2. Press the emergency call or alarm button inside the car and wait for a response.
3. If you have a mobile phone, call Special Constable Service at 519-253-3000 Ext. 4444. From a campus phone, dial Ext. 4444.
4. Do not attempt to force the doors open or use the ceiling hatch. The car may begin moving again without warning. More injuries result from improper exits than from the malfunctions themselves.
5. Stay in contact and wait for the service technician to release you.
If you are outside an elevator and believe someone is trapped inside, contact Special Constable Service at Ext. 4444 immediately. Do not attempt a rescue.

Reporting a Problem
Report an elevator that is out of service, behaving unusually, or showing a fault to Maintenance Dispatch at ext. 2850, or submit a work order through Azzier. If no one is trapped, this is the correct route rather than Special Constable Service.
Please provide when reporting:
The building and the specific elevator, if there is more than one; what the elevator is doing or failing to do; the floor it is stopped at, if known; and whether the car is empty.
Before You Report
Some faults have a simple cause that can be ruled out in a moment.
Check the door track for debris first, particularly in winter.
Salt, grit, stone and slush carried in on footwear collect in the door sill and stop the doors closing fully, which takes the elevator out of service. Clearing the track often resolves the problem on the spot.
- Check that no call button is stuck in the depressed position, in the car or on the landing.
- Check that nothing is obstructing the doors on any floor.
A meaningful proportion of reported faults turn out to be debris or a stuck button rather than a mechanical failure. A brief check before calling avoids an unnecessary technician call-out.
Maintenance and Inspection
Campus elevators are maintained under a service contract with a licensed elevator service provider and are inspected as required under Ontario's elevating devices regulations. Only qualified elevator mechanics are permitted to work on the equipment.
Planned outages for maintenance, modernization or inspection are posted in advance on the Notice of Service Interruptions page.
Accessibility
If an elevator outage affects your ability to reach a class, office or appointment, contact Maintenance Dispatch at ext. 2850 so alternative arrangements can be considered. Students requiring accommodation should also contact Student Accessibility Services.
