Professor and Windsor Law Centre for Cities Director Anneke Smit speaks with CBC Windsor’s Jennifer La Grassa about the F. W. Begley Public School closure in Windsor, COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on marginalized communities, and the need for a consultative and tailored public health and school board response.

Amid a busy year of research, virtual public events, and growing collaboration with academic and community partners locally and across the country, the Windsor Law Centre for Cities will receive funding from the University of Windsor’s Office of the President. Earmarked for strategic planning, $10,000 will be awarded from UWindsor’s Research Support Fund.

Earlier this month, the Windsor Law Centre for Cities collaborated with the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) to publish a report on cities and COVID-19 after 100 days of shutdown. The report, which examines how life and governance — how we live, move, work, care, and prosper — in Canadian cities have changed over the first 100 days of the pandemic, was released Friday on COVID100.ca.

Windsor Law Professor & Centre for Cities Director Anneke Smit and Allard Law Professor Alexandra Flynn published an opinion piece in the Toronto Star Monday making the argument that local governments are “bleeding democracy” in their rush to address COVID-19.

An interdisciplinary research team has received $24,600 in funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, another $3,000 from WIFF, and $2,000 in in-kind support from UWindsor’s School of the Creative Arts to find ways to improve the Windsor International Film Festival's (WIFF) year-round reach.
