Technical Workshop Presentation by: Xiaofeng (Michael) Liu PhD Student

Introduction to Reinforcement Learning

Date: Thursday, December 1st, 2022

Time:  12:00pm – 1:00pm

Location: 4th Floor (Workshop space) at 300 Ouellette Avenue (School of Computer Science Advanced Computing Hub)

Abstract:

Reinforcement learning (RL) is the training of machine learning models to make a sequence of decisions. The agent learns to achieve a goal in an uncertain, potentially complex environment. In reinforcement learning, an artificial intelligence faces a game-like situation. The computer employs trial and error to come up with a solution to the problem.  This workshop will introduce the main concepts of Reinforcement Learning (RL) with examples.

At the end of this workshop’s student will learn the following:

Understand the components of RL

Understand the concepts of RL

Understand how an agent learns from the environment

Prerequisites:

Knowledge of Python

Workshop Outline:

  • What is the difference between Reinforcement Learning and other machine learning methods? (5 min)
  • Components of RL (15 min)
  • RL learning process (10 min)
  • Example of RL (20 min)
  • Q&A (10min)
