Abstract: The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has introduced significant challenges for managing large-scale data across distributed and heterogeneous environments. Integrated IoT-fog-cloud systems provide a promising approach for supporting scalable, latency-aware, and adaptive data management. This comprehensive review examines integrated data management approaches from architectural, operational, and functional perspectives. The reviewed literature is organized into four major directions: storage and retrieval, data processing, analytics, and security and privacy. Representative studies are compared in terms of their focus, methods, strengths, and limitations. The review identifies key research gaps, including fragmented solutions, limited cross-layer coordination, insufficient adaptivity, and challenges in multi-objective optimization. It also highlights future directions toward unified, context-aware, and adaptive data management frameworks for heterogeneous IoT-fog-cloud systems.
