Transition of Autistic Learners from Secondary to Post-Secondary Education

The transition from higher education to employment represents a critical period for autistic adults. Success during this transition depends on multiple interacting factors. These factors include the quality of educational experiences, the availability of appropriate support services, the effectiveness of classroom accommodations, the receptivity of employers, and the presence of workplace supports. Existing research has examined these factors in isolation. A comprehensive synthesis is needed to inform evidence-based policy and practice.

This study will examine the transition experiences of autistic learners as they move from secondary to post-secondary education, exploring both barriers and successes. It will examine the experiences, opportunities, challenges, and support mechanisms for autistic adults aged over 20 years in higher education and employment settings.

Specific objectives include:

  1. To review the educational experiences of autistic adults aged over 20 years in higher education institutions.

  2. To identify barriers affecting classroom participation and academic achievement among autistic students.

  3. To examine the effectiveness of inclusive teaching strategies and classroom accommodations in higher education.

  4. To investigate the availability and effectiveness of university support services for autistic adults.

  5. To explore the perceptions of autistic adults regarding inclusion and engagement in higher education classrooms.

  6. To analyze the transition process from higher education to employment among autistic adults.

  7. To identify employment opportunities and career pathways available to autistic adults.

  8. To examine challenges faced by autistic adults during recruitment and workplace integration.

  9. To assess the role of workplace accommodations in improving employment outcomes.

  10. To develop recommendations for higher education institutions, employers, and policymakers to enhance educational and employment opportunities for autistic adults.
